VANcation 2008: Trip to California 7/13-7/14

We left the Country Fair Sunday evening at 6 or 7 pm. Luckily Danielle did the hard work of finding where we parked when she left earlier in the afternoon, so we didn't have to search around in the blazing hot sun. The kids were filthy and sticky from head to toe, so we gave them a quick bath with a water jug we keep in our car, and then were on our way. Our plan was that they would be so exhausted that they would sleep for several hours, allowing us to get through a good part of our driving in peace. This didn't work exactly as we had hoped--the kids took turns sleeping and waking, but we were able to make it to Ashland by midnight. The only excitement we had was coming through Southern Oregon at 10 pm, with the gas light on and not a station opened for long enough to make us really nervous. Luckily we got to Grants Pass and were able to fill up, get some food, and continue on our way.

We slept well, ate a pretty good continental breakfast at our hotel, Bard's Inn, and then headed out about 10:45.

Despite all of the fires, Northern California wasn't as smoky as we heard it had been the week before. We made it to Jim and Sheila's by about 5:30 to eat dinner, visit, and pick up the car that Rich was borrowing.

The enchiladas were delicious, the kids got to run off some energy, and we had a great walk down to the lake and back... Then we headed on to Loreen's to spend the night.

We stopped for Dairy Queen on the way... the chocolate face cannot lie
The swing set Grandpa Jim built was a big hit

That look in Kaden's eye...you have to keep an eye on that one. :) The swing set looks really nice.

At least there was some sleeping on the way right?
