Labor Watch

I'm sitting in my dark kitchen, a candle burning peaceful, smooth labor-vibes into the air, glancing uncontrollably across the street every few seconds...
What a beautiful day it was! You can read the events from Leah's perspective, and I'll just show you the pics:

V Day

Valentine's Day changes a lot when you have small children. At least, it has for us. Gone are any expectations of romantic dinners alone, candle-lit massages, or (gasp) s-e-x... Valentine's day for us now is more of a family love puddle.. a display of affection for the UrbanHippie's big and small.

Rich and I did get to have some quality alone time yesterday, during our home inspection. It was a little bit strange to not be chasing after the boys, and to have the luxury of focusing on a task for so many consecutive hours. Then we picked up all our littles and headed over to our favorite piercing shop, Nomad, and celebrated.

Nomad is the work of Blake, Leah's husband. He has an amazing story, snippets of which are told here, and is a gifted piercer, artist, musician, and all around cool dude. Last night he celebrated the 15 year anniversary of Nomad, with a sweet little gathering and lots of yummy cupcakes and wine. Really...who needs sex on Valentine's day, if you've got cupcakes and wine???

Our New (Old) House: Thursday Thirteen #5

We have been brewing and dreaming and manifesting, hoping and wishing, and manifesting some more, and now my official post:

We are buying a HOME!!!

Not another rental property...not a "this will do for now" place... a HOME for our family to settle down and grow up in.

We have been fantasizing about this day for some time (really, since we started dating and I drove Rich around Irvington in hopes that he would fall in love with the city and want to move here and buy a big old house), but it began in earnest when we told my best friend Leah that we wanted to look for a house that was closer-in (meaning closer to the river, which separates the eastside from downtown, where the neighborhoods are more pedestrian-and-bicycle-friendly). Leah heard "we will be looking for a house that is farther away from yours" and she started searching her neighborhood for houses for sale that fit the size we would be looking for. Who needs a realtor when you have a motivated best friend??

A week or two later she calls and says "I found your house." She proceeds to tell me that the man who owns the house directly across the street from hers is planning to sell soon, and we have just gotta buy it. Whatever she said after that went in one ear, danced around on all my swirling thoughts of "How am I going to pitch this to Rich so that he'll be just as excited about it as I am??" and right back out the other side. I think she said something about cute ranch, daylight basement, huge garden, and fruit trees....but I'm still not sure.

I was worried that Rich wasn't going to go for it. It didn't sound like his style of home (it's not a Craftsman or an old Victorian, doesn't have a gigantic jacuzzi tub or a 15-car garage), and I wasn't sure how he'd feel about living across the street from my best friend. But, when he called me on his next break, I couldn't wait and I told him about it right away. He sounded excited.. genuinely excited...and he said he'd love to go look at it.

Since that day, and even moreso since the first time we walked through it last October, we have been manifesting. We have been living as if this were indeed happening...as if this house would certainly soon be ours. And from where we stand now, we are not far off from that becoming a reality. The escrow account was opened today, we have a signed and accepted offer on the table, and are now going through the formalities of purchasing our first home together.

So, without further ado,

13 Things I Love About Our New House

1. It has an entry way!! I hate the clusterfuck of shoes that currently congregates just inside our doorway, because there is no transition from "outside" to "inside." Here we have, The Entry Way:
2. A door to the basement (see picture above). I am thrilled that there will be a way to keep the kids from playing on the stairs (for a couple of years, anyway...until they figure out the kid-proof knobby things).

3. It has an eating area with great windows (that look upon my lovah's house!)

3. The "hub," as I am affectionately coining it right now. I am a paper stacker. I need to have a landing/launch pad for all of my stuff that is coming into and going out of the house...a staging area. I am so excited to have a designated place for this to happen, instead of having the mailbox throwing up all over the kitchen table or the counter.
4. See that Suburban right across the street?? That is my friends'. :) Not only are they our friends, but Leah is also a stay-at-home-mom, they homeschool, they will soon have 3 kids too, and our girls play wonderfully together (hopefully our little ones will too, someday soon!). Rich and I are beyond thrilled to have that kind of support and community so close and easily accessible.
5. The message board comes with the house. I know... we totally scored.
6. The Windows
The house was built by the first owner, and he added a lot of really special and functional touches--these windows being one. They overlook the 1/2 acre of land and have a gorgeous natural view.
7. The Dining Area
We can't wait to host Christmas dinner.

8. The three upstairs bedrooms are close together. I'm sure that the boys will be in our room for several more years, but Kylin is ready to sleep in her own room and I am so glad that it is right across the hallway from ours.
9. The bathroom has a ton of storage and a wonderful long counter...
and the countertop is the same darling little flower-stamp print that is in the first house I bought.
10. In addition to the huge living room upstairs, there is a cozy family room downstairs with a door that opens out into the backyard. I can't wait to be able to let the kids run free and play out back.
and I'm so excited to put a wood stove down here!!

11. An office!!

and only 2 bathrooms to clean, instead of 3 :)

12. My very favoritist room of the house:

The Laundry Room

and my second:

My Very Own Craft Room
(I love love love the old-school tile!!!)

13. And last, but certainly not least, The Storage Space (this doesn't include the 2 car garage or under the stairs!!!)

I don't have pictures yet of the backyard, but I will tell you it is equally as wonderful as the inside. There is a huge garden, a super-duper clothesline, fruit trees and bushes, and a deck.

We can't wait to have you all over for a party!!!

13 un-Green Confessions

I'm BACK!! I know I said a year (what was I smoking???) but I barely lasted a week... I just couldn't stand to blog on iweb anymore.
I love mac. LOVE mac. every Mac product I have encountered has been so user-friendly, so seamless, so well-designed and thought-out...I assumed their blogging software would have to be the same. Well, I was wrong. But, that is for another post. After outlining with boastful pride all of the ways in which my lifestyle is gentle on the earth, I will share with you the truth...I really am human, just like anyone else, and I have some very un-earth-friendly habits. Today I am confessing my un-green sins. repenting for all of the blogosphere to see...

1. i love twinkies. i know, i know.. you are thinking, "besides being sick and wrong, what is SO un-green about those sweet little creme-filled sponge cakes??" well, yes, they are completely devoid of nutritional content, which is a strong case against eating them in and of itself. but, as far as direct environmental impact: they are super over-packaged, they are NOT produced locally, and they are full of sugar (among other scary things). As I found out in this article, The Political Economy of Twinkies: An Inquiry Into the Real Cost of Things, "Environmentally, sugar is not a benign crop. Its growth (not to mention its processing into the highly refined white, granular stuff we desire) is responsible for damage to corral reefs in Hawaii, water pollution in Buenos Aries, damage to river estuaries in Brazil, and waterways in the Philippines. "

If you want to know more about Twinkies (which you don't, or you will never ever eat one again), read Twinkie, Deconstructed.

2. I use Soft & Dri deoderant. I have tried the "natural" brands... Tom's, Jason, even that crystal rock thing... but I always end up stinky. I can usually put up with it for a few months at a time, but somehow I always come running back (usually sweaty) to my trusty old anti-perspirant. Remind me about the ill-effects of aluminum again, please??

3. We still use teflon cookware.

4. I want a boob job. :) I have gone back and forth and back and forth..and probably will go back again. I imagine living with these saggy things for the rest of my life, and trying to feel sexy again...it is hard to imagine. Maybe when I'm not nursing and I don't have a child constantly attached to my body it will be easier to feel sexy despite the skin-bags... we'll see.

5. I never buy organic butter. I often buy organic everything else, but not butter. I'm not sure why that is...it's not a conscious decision. I bet that it's even more important to buy butter that is organic, as I know most of the chemicals and toxins are stored in the fat...I would bet that butter has a higher percentage than the milk does.

6. We drive gas-powered cars and our current home is on natural (natural?! HA!) gas. The family car is our beloved Yuri, the Eurovan, which doesn't get driven everyday, but isn't easy on the gas, either. Rich commutes in the Honda Civic, which gets great gas mileage, but it's still consuming a non-renewable resource. I am looking forward to moving back into a home that runs on bio-diesel!

7. We throw all of our food scraps into the garbage. I was so into composting when we were in our last house that had a big back yard... but since we moved and this place has felt so temporary, we never bought or made a compost bin. And now we are planning on moving soon, and I just keep not doing it...and every time I throw another piece of compostable food into the garbage I feel a pang of guilt.

8. Although I don't even wipe with it, I still depend on toilet paper to wipe the hair off the shower walls and out of the drain. I need to just buck up and start using my fingers...they can be washed.

9. I dye my hair with Feria. Just the other day I dyed my hair again, and realized as I was getting light-headed and nauseous that those toxic chemicals and their toxic fumes could not be good for anyone.

10. I just can't part with my annual holiday letter. This year I tried sending out an email letter, and it just doesn't feel the same.

11. We still have a gas-powered mower. Wait, does it count, though, even if we don't use it???

12. Our downspouts are not disconnected. We could even get a nice fat credit and discount on our water/sewer bill...we just have to come up with a creative solution for re-directing and using the water that falls on our property. Anyone want to help us??

13. Remember my not-so-gas-friendly Eurovan?? I drive it to my parent's house, from my house. It's .1 miles. I don't need to say more.

Your comments are welcome, but please be gentle on me.

Happy Winter Solstice

We had our first solstice party last year. This year we had an intimate little dinner and yule log ritual with Blake and Leah and their girls. It was very fitting, as our life feels very transitional right now. We are looking forward to being in a bigger more long-term home next year, and are envisioning the get-togethers we will be able to host. This year we opted for simple and special.

A Month Late

I worked very hard on, and was so excited about this picture I made for Leah on her birthday...but i couldn't figure out how to convert it from being a .comicdoc file into a jpeg that i could use elsewhere. Well...I think my intuitive understanding of all that is mac has evolved, because I just opened it up again and was able to export and convert it in the blink of an eye [brushing fingernails on shirt] ...if only i'd figured it out a month ago...

Happy Birthday, Lovah!!

I cannot recount the story of our meeting any better than Leah did, but I can say that I've never felt so much connection to another person, so quickly, as I have with her. It is not only that we have so much in common, but that we each listen as much as we talk, and approach the world in very similar ways. Right from the first time we met, it has been so easy and comfortable to be with Leah...to talk, and not to talk...Our friendship feels like a comfy pair of jeans that are worn-in in all the right places, and fit perfectly.

I love her sense of style, and her appreciation for beauty. I love that she can walk into someone's house (especially mine!), clean, and mother their children, without it feeling intrusive, over-bearing, or judgemental. I love how purposeful and thoughtful she is about her parenting, her health, and her relationships. I love her sense of humor. I love her genuine compassion, and her clear boundaries. I am a better mom, woman, and person because I know her.

Leah, I hope you have a wonderful, relaxing birthday. I am so glad you were born.

Teething

Kiran went to town on this chicken bone...Poppy would be proud!

Kaden is getting all 4 canine teeth right now, and had an especially rough day today. He woke up screaming, saying "owwwwwwwww!" and digging at his ears. I was so thankful that Rich came home from work right away, because there was no way I could have taken care of everyone by myself. When I am alone with all 3 children (or even 2, for that matter) it is like performing a juggling act...at any given moment there is only one ball in my hand, and 1 or 2 are in the air. On days like today, when one child needs my full attention, there is no way I can care for the other baby, and I certainly don't have much left for Kylin.
I have zero experience with ear infections or ear aches, as Kylin never had one and so far neither boy has either. Luckily, Leah has some magic book of cures (lou, you should post the name of it in the comments), and she read me the symptoms and remedies for an ear ache caused by teething. As soon as I gave him the homeopathic chamomilla, and put the warm garlic oil & willow ear drops in his ears, he calmed right down and fell asleep...it was like magic. He saw the other doctor in my chiro's office (http://www.mamababychiro.com/), who did some craniosacral therapy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craniosacral_therapy) on him and adjusted his neck. I have believed for a long time and experienced myself the healing power of chiropractic care, but it was amazing to see it this dramatically and on my sweet, hurting baby. While Dr. Becky did the CST, Kaden's eyes began rolling back in his head, his lids became heavy, and within minutes he was asleep in her hands. He woke up briefly while she adjusted him, quickly fell back to sleep in the car, and then slept soundly for 4 hours. When he woke up he had regained his spirts, his appetite, and his mischievous spunk...he was back to normal!! I expect he might still have some pain in the coming week, as those teeth continue to come in, but I'm so thankful for the relief he got today.

Skating

Rich and I met Leah (http://mamanomad.blogspot.com/), Joi (http://rivergrey.wordpress.com/), and Candice (http://alearningwayoflife.blogspot.com/) today so our girls could tear up the rink.
They had a lot of fun.

Joi promised that in the future she'd lay off the pipe before our get-togethers

I still let her hold Kiran though, cause I knew she'd beat me up if I didn't

He could smell it on her breath, though

ETA: I solved one of my blogger problems last night..woo hoo!! Now I can post vertical pictures here, so you don't have to look at them sideways. So, here's some more skating pics.

Happy Birthday, Joi

I met Joi at the MDC Cake Party almost exactly one year ago. She went by angstmommy at the time, and had just given birth to her sweet baby boy, Greyson. Grey is now a year old, angstmommy goes by Joi, and we are now friends. Joi is the kind of girl that is mysterious, mischievious, and fiery. She gives and does for others, asking nothing in return...but if you do for her she tries to repay you ten-fold. She is a fierce and loving mother, a tender partner, and a loyal and compassionate friend. I'm so glad that you were born, Joi.

Sip & See

I've heard that this is the hip thing to do now... The Sip and See... You invite everyone over, serve them wine, and let them oogle over your new little bundle. So, we decided to see what all the fuss is about. Let me tell you, everything they say is true... You've definitely got to try one of these things for yourself.
